FAQ
We work hard to keep our waitlist short, but during peak times, it may extend based on demand. Early morning and after-school appointments are in high demand, resulting in potentially longer waits. We do agree that taking your child out of school to receive speech and language services helps to avoid future academic challenges by receiving the support in a timely way.
We recommend testing your child’s hearing if not already and offer free consultations to discuss specific strategies that you can trial. We will soon be offering an online parent education course to assist with learning more about early child language development.
We operate Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM. We are closed on statutory holidays. We may close our office for inclement weather, but will notify you as soon as possible. Therapists will notify you in advance of any vacation time and with possible alternative therapist options.
Families can pause services with at least two weeks’ notice, so that we can prepare home programming if indicated. Spots cannot be held for more than 2 weeks due to high demand for services. We’ll try to find alternative scheduling options upon resumption.
We require 24-hour notice for cancellations. Less notice incurs a 50% fee, while no-shows are charged 100% of the session fee. We can offer virtual therapy as an alternative or reschedule your session to avoid cancellation fees. If schools are closed for inclement weather, our office will close as well. We can offer a virtual appointment as an alternative if appropriate.
Initial consultations focus on rapport building, history-taking, and observation. Depending on the child’s age, activities may include play-based interactions or formal testing, with optional formal reports for a fee.
Sessions are highly individualized, incorporating play-based therapy and various supports and strategies to engage the child. Strategies are demonstrated and practiced to improve communication skills.
Home practice will be provided and can be integrated into everyday routines (ie. meal time, bath etc.), aiming to be meaningful and relevant. Practice helps reinforce skills learned during sessions and supports progress. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in therapy sessions as well.
We adopt a neurodiversity-affirming approach, focusing on leveraging strengths, presuming competence, and accepting all forms of communication. Collaboration with other professionals is encouraged.
