HELPING YOU CLIMB TO COMMUNICATION SUCCESS

"Let's Read" Summer Camp

Who is this day camp designed for?

Whether your child is just learning to read or may be a struggling reader, we are here to help!
The program is designed for children 5-8 years old (SK to Grade 3).
Children who have been diagnosed or have suspected learning disability, ADHD and/or level 1 ASD are welcome to attend and will have extra support available for their individual learning needs.
Please keep in mind, we will not have an adequate ratio of instructors to children to provide 1:1 supervision for children for higher care needs.

Why is it important that my child attend this day camp?

Literacy is one of the most important skills and predictors of a child’s academic success. The camp program is also designed with the elementary school curriculum in mind based on the Science of Reading (SOR) and covers the 5 pillars of reading success: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. All of this, plus…games, sensory activities, movement, dance, outside play, songs and crafts will motivate and captivate each child’s attention!

Where is the camp located?

The camp will be offered through the Heritage Green Family Church located at 360 Isaac Brock Rd in Stoney Creek. The Church space is safe, clean and welcoming with a fenced in outside yard and play equipment. This is not a religious program, but we are grateful to our Church partner for investing in the children of our Stoney Creek community.

Who will be leading the camp?

Melissa Mascio is the owner and registered Speech-Language Pathologist at Mountain Speech Language Services located in Stoney Creek. With over 20 years of experience working with children and adults of all ages with speech, language and literacy disorders and differences, she is very excited to be offering this summer camp program again in 2025. Paul is a certified Ontario teacher with over 20 years of elementary teaching experience and a reading specialist. Paul is very much looking forward to connecting with the children and families again this year!
A Communication Disorders Assistant (CDA), and trained volunteers (undergraduate students) will also be assisting with the camp. The ratio will be 1 instructor to 3-4 children ensuring plenty of small groups and 1:1 instruction time. We will provide a screening of your child’s reading ability and a summary of progress at the end of the camp week. A receipt will be provided to reflect (3 hours of direct SLP therapy/week) and this can be submitted to extended health benefits.
Alex Douglas, Pastor will also be reading to the children each day. If you haven’t heard Alex read, you are in for a treat!
Melissa and Paul are passionate about helping children climb to academic success and have put a lot of thought into creating a day camp that would not only be fun and motivating, but educational.
